Mariners 5 v. Seacoast Spartans AAA 5 at Methuen (11/23/13)
The Mariners came out flying in the second game of the day and jumped to a 2-0 lead on goals from Sam Marjerison (unassisted) and Walt Lewandowski (Greene). However, the team seemed destined to prove the adage that a two-goal lead is the most dangerous, and played their worst hockey of the year as the Spartans reeled off 4 unanswered goals.
With 3:30 left in the second period, the Mariners came alive as Kyle Kaserman (unassisted) cut the lead in half to 4-3. David Woodford then tied the game on a nice one-timer slap shot off a pass from Sam Marjerison that whistled past Max Winson who was screening the Spartans’ goaltender.
The Spartans again took the lead less than a minute later, but Walt Lewandowski scored his second goal of the game to tie the contest with 4:53 left to play. In the final minutes, both teams had a number of scoring opportunities, but had to settle for a tie.
Following the Valley League games, the Mariners made a team trip to the Agganis Arena for an exciting 3-3 tie between the University of North Dakota and Boston University. Despite some suspect bus driving and a late night tour of Cambridge, Somerville, Charlestown, Saugus, Everett, Melrose and a few other towns, a good time was had by all.
